Hudson County at Home and at War
The Vietnam Era
In late 2020, the Friends of the Secaucus Public Library asked veterans who live or have lived in Hudson County to share their experiences both as servicemembers during the Vietnam War and afterwards as veterans. The following video features three Hudson County veterans: Lee Fahley and Mike Wilson of Bayonne and Jersey City native Ed O’Connor. They are joined by Dr. Joseph Ryan, Public Information Director for the City of Bayonne and adjunct professor of political science at St. Francis College, who provides an overview of the war and how NJ residents responded to the escalating conflict.
The Friends of the Library are also honored to be able to share the following gallery, created to showcase the wartime and post-war photos of Secaucus resident George J. Berthel who served from 1968-1970 in the US Army as a Cobra Crew Chief.
This program is made possible by a grant from the New Jersey State Historical Commission, a Division of the Department of State, and administered by the Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs, Thomas A. DeGise, Hudson County, County Executive and Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
Hudson County at Home and at War is an ongoing project supported by the Friends of the Secaucus Public Library. If you or someone you know would like to be part of this project by sharing memories, photos, letters or other historical content, please email secaucuslibraryfriends@gmail.com
